.*is a wildcard which will match any number of any character. For example, enteringr.*cketwill match "racket" or "rocket". Try ^[c-r].*[a-z]pple$ and compare with ^[c-r].pple$ . - Remember, these are 1913 and 1828 editions and will not contain some modern words.
